Waldorf Chinese Restaurant, Kolkata
23-January-2024This is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Kolkata if not the oldest. Setup in the early fifties of the last century, the eatery has changed ownership thrice and is run by a local business group now. But they try their best to maintain the legacy and taste for which Waldorf has been know over the ages.
At one time, it used to be frequented by the who’s who of Kolkata and India. For the Bollywood stars who used to travel once in a while to Calcutta (as it was known then), Waldorf and Trincas used to be a must visit almost like a pilgrimage.
The restaurant was located in Park Street earlier ran there for almost 45 years. Afterwards, they have re-located to Russel Street which is just off the Park Street.

The staff at Waldorf Chinese Restaurant are polite and courteous. If you ask for suggestions then they guide you about the different dishes and make recommendations.
The interiors of the restaurant are well maintained and clean. But the lighting is less so the general ambience is of a dark place.
You can see in the menu of Waldorf Chinese (picture above) that the prices are reasonable(for place of its repute, that is).
The restaurant has a seating capacity of 90 people. But I doubt that it gets filled to the capacity very often. The tastes of the younger generation have changed and they don’t have the loyalty which the older patrons had. Even today, the restaurant is visited only the people who have the attachment and belong to the 80s or 90s.
