I drove down to Shantiniketan on a hot June Saturday. It was unplanned and with no particular agenda in mind. The roads have improved immensely in the last one year or so. Now its possible to reach Bolpur from Kolkata within 3 hours, even when driving with a leisurely pace.
I visited the Shilpagram, the University campus, Sunajhuri and Amar Kutir.
This is one of the exhibit areas inside the Srujani Shilpagram.
Noticed this clay art piece and clicked the picture. I am guessing the artist would have created this as a pot for plants. But now its serving as a big Ash Tray for cigarettes. Most of the art pieces here have been created by the students of Vishwa Bharti. The Shilpagram charges a small ticket fee for entry. The areas are demarcated state-wise inside the park. When I visited, it was hot and humid, so could not spend a long time there. Its a nice place for clicking photographs though.
The above image was one of the exhibits at the Shilpagram.
This is a Baul Singer at the famous SunaJhuri handicrafts market. These singers perform in the open air under the shadow of trees. The visitors listen and then click pictures and then move on. (Like I did…:-().
In addition to Baul singers, there are also a couple of groups of tribal ladies who perform their traditional dance. Its very nice and generally tourists also join them in the dance and get their own pics clicked with them.
I stayed at a Hotel called Aranya Resort. This is located in the Kamarpara in Bolpur (https://maps.app.goo.gl/J8rw7Me1ZPeLWPVs9). They have a reasonably good buffet spread for breakfast. The pic above was clicked in their restaurant at breakfast time.
